Dunstable Priory Church of St Peter, Bedfordshire
Sunday 26th July 2009, 3.00 pm for 6.30 pm service
This event, another in our popular series of Regional Area
Evensongs, will be conducted by Marie Price (RSCM Area Education and Training Officer) and
accompanied by Martin Hart (Assistant Director of Music at Dunstable Priory and Director of
the Priory Girls Choir).
We will be visiting Dunstable Priory Church, a large and impressive building which is the nave of all that remains of an originally much larger Augustinian Priory Church. It is one of the best examples of Norman Architecture in England, built originally in the form of a cross with a great tower at the crossing and with two smaller towers at the west end. Much of the front was destroyed in a storm shortly after building. The west front has a huge entrance consisting of four arches (1170-90) above a later 15th century doorway. Dunstable lies at the crossroads of two ancient routes, the ancient Icknield Way and the Roman Watling Street. More information can be found on the website at Dunstable Priory St Peter.
The three manual organ was built by Norman & Beard in 1911, renovated in 1985 by Brian Bunting and was recently updated with a new piston capture system.
For an idea of the church's location here's a link to a Google Maps - Map of Dunstable. There is also more information on location (including postcode) contained in the pdf flyer (see below).
Light refreshments will be served before the service.
We hope you will already have most of the music in your library, but all is available for free download, just click on the links next to each item. Psalms and hymns will be available on the day.
