Regional Evensong at St Michael and All Angels Church, Watford

On a cloudy, dreary Sunday afternoon, 36 choristers from all over the diocese made their way to St Michael and All Angels church in Watford ready for the RSCM Choral evensong event. In the capable hands of Andy Benoy directing the joint choir and Chris Muhley accompanying on the organ, a two hour rehearsal was followed by tea, coffee and a large selection of home made cakes kindly provided by members of the choir and congregation of St Michaels.

The music for the evening combined several pieces in tribute to Peter Hurford, whose 80th birthday it was the following day, with some well known hymns and canticles. The introit – Above all praise and all majesty by Felix Mendelssohn set the scene for the service held on the feast of Christ the King. Responses by Ayleward and Canticles in C by Stanford led to the anthem, Evening Hymn by H. Balfour Gardiner, a great sing in seven parts in places!

I think all agreed that the event was a success from a musical perspective and that a good sing was had by all! More cake and refreshments followed the service and our thanks go to the cake makers and the ladies providing the refreshments to the weary choristers! Our thanks also to Andy and Chris for their musical input into the event.
