Regional Festal Evensong, Bedford: A Review

Sunday 14 October 2012

On October 14th a Regional Festal Evensong was held in St. Paul’s Church Bedford. It was a wonderful opportunity to sing under the direction of John Witchell, the Former Head of Hertfordshire Music Service. The accompanist was Ian Runnells, the Director of Music, St Paul’s Church Bedford. It was an inspirational service which allowed less experienced singers to join with the more experience and tackle music that they would not normally be included in the repertoire of the average Parish Church. The Music included the Introit: Teach me thy way, O Lord by Fox, the responses were the well known 5 part William Smith of Durham, the Canticles Basil Harwood in A flat, and the Anthem: Let the people praise thee, composed by William Mathias for the wedding of Charles and Diana in 1981. It was challenging for some, but actually sounded more complex than it really was!

Over fifty people attended the event, all ages from seven to eighty+ with very differing level of experience. There was a long tea break for everybody to get to know each other and exchange stories, the children particularly enjoyed this and will come again, the cake too was a great success – it went down really well! Thank you to the vicar Canon John Pedlar and the host choir of St. Paul and to Marie Price of the RSCM committee for making this memorable event possible. There was excellent feedback at the event and many requests for a similar event to be repeated. We hope to return to St. Paul’s church in the near future.
