Safari Evensong: Chipperfield, Sarratt and Bovingdon

Sunday 10th June 2018 (Eve of St. Barnabas)

2:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Reviving a past format, we are offering a Safari Evensong event.  Under the direction of Roger Carter, BCP Evensong will be sung at three attractive churches in the Rickmansworth Deanery in the south-west of our area.

St Lawrence Bovingdon

St. Lawrence, Bovingdon dates from the mid-19th century, incorporating material from as far back as the 14th century.  It has the largest churchyard in the diocese.

Holy Cross Sarratt

Holy Cross, Sarratt is a Grade 2 listed building dating from the late 12th century (including mediaeval wall painting) with later additions and general restoration in 1865/6.

St Paul’s Chipperfield

St. Paul, Chipperfield is a Grade 2 listed building dating from 1837 with an award-winning modern hall attached.

Participants should gather at St. Paul, Chipperfield for a general rehearsal at 2pm.  The “Two Brewers” (adjacent to the church) and “The Windmill” (400 yards down the road from the church) both have excellent reputations for their pub food, should you wish to take lunch locally, though prior booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.

We shall then adjourn to St. Lawrence, Bovingdon for a brief site recap and the first part of Evensong before moving on for the next part to Holy Cross, Sarratt and finishing back at St. Paul, Chipperfield.  Tea will be available afterwards at Chipperfield, dispersing at 5.30pm.

Music, which will be provided on the day, will be approachably straightforward, and chosen with regard to the capacities of those taking part.

Address details for those using satnav or other GPS-based navigation are :

St. Paul, The Common, Chipperfield, WD4 9BS
St. Lawrence, Church Street, Bovingdon, HP3 0LU
Holy Cross, Briars Edge, Church Lane, Sarratt, WD3 6HE

Maps will be provided on the day.  There is ample parking at all three locations, but it will obviously be an economy if participants can share transport as far as possible during the afternoon.

Choir robes (including academic hoods where appropriate) are recommended but not obligatory.

The charge for this event is £5 per head, discounted to £4 for early bird bookings received by 25th May.  Bookings close on 1st June.  Please complete the form below and if you are paying by cheque, send it together with your cheque payable to “RSCM St. Albans Area”, to Nicholas King, 42 St. Alban’s Hill, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 9NG.   Alternatively you can pay by internet bank transfer to Sort Code: 40-52-40; A/C No: 00029988. Want to Sing Regularly at St Albans Cathedral?

abbeyHere’s an opportunity to sing regularly at St Albans Cathedral. The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban PARISH SINGERS is a voluntary, auditioned, adult choir who sing at most of the 9.30 Parish Eucharist Services throughout the year, as well as at Carols on the Hour at Christmas and occasional evensongs. We sing a variety of music, but mostly traditional motets. Prospective members who are competent singers and sight readers are very welcome to come along and try us out prior to audition. Rehearsals are in the Cathedral Song School on Wednesday evenings 8-9.15pm every two to three weeks, followed by a quick drink in the White Hart opposite. The choir is very friendly and auditions, with Andrew Lucas – Master of the Music – are not onerous. Please contact the Cathedral Music Secretary, Lizzie, on 01727 890245 or by email:
