Taizé and Iona Workshop

Come and join us for an inspiring day looking at music from the remarkable communities of Taizé and Iona. This simple and deeply spiritual music suits groups small or large using voices and/or instruments – please bring either or both – and different church situations. We will even write our own! Please bring a packed lunch, hot drinks will be provided for a small contribution. This is a joint event with the East Herts Church Choirs Association (EHCCA). The event will be led by Miles Quick, the RSCM’s Head of Congregational & Instrumental Music.

When? Saturday June 8th 2019 10am – 5pm. The day will finish with a service starting at approximately 4:15pm. Anyone is welcome to attend just the service.

Where? WareSt Mary’s Church, High St, SG12 9BA.
Pay and display car parking is available opposite the church in Burgage Lane, SG12 9XD – entrance next to the Brewery Tap at the northern end of the High Street. Other car parks are also available.
The best way into the town from the south is straight up the A10 to the junction just north of the viaduct, and the next beyond Hertford, signed STEVENAGE. At the top of the slip road turn right. This takes you down into the northern end of the town (and the tower of the church may be clearly seen from halfway down the hill.) At the bottom, bear left at the first roundabout, then right at the large roundabout a few yards further on. The entrance to the public car park is about 250 yards down Baldock Street on the right.

What to wear? Wear comfortable clothes. We will not wear robes.

What to bring? Bring a packed lunch. Instrumentalists (grade 5 and above) should bring their instrument and a music stand. Guitarists are welcome; they should expect to play melodies and not just chords. Bring your payment. The cost is £3 per adult; schoolchildren are free. Anyone bringing children (under 18s) who are not their own should bring Parental Consent Forms.

The closing date for applications from instrumentalists is Wednesday May 29th. This is to allow time for parts to be written for the instruments. Note that instrumental parts will mostly assume a minimum standard of grade 5; however there will be opportunities for those below that standard to play or, at other times, to sing. Singers must register before June 8th.

EHCCA may be contacted by email at dorothy@dayre.plus.com or by phone on 01992 463121.

Regional Evensong and Meet The Director

Saturday 29th June 2019

at

All Saints’ Church, Leighton Buzzard

We are pleased to announce that the new Director of the RSCM, Hugh Morris, is coming to direct a Regional Evensong at All Saints’ Church, Leighton Buzzard on Saturday 29th June (the feast of St Peter).

All are welcome to join us at this event, which we hope will be well-supported.

The rehearsal is at 3:15pm and the service (BCP) is at 5:30pm, finishing at around 6:20pm.  The accompanist will be Nicholas King.  The service will be followed by an opportunity to meet Hugh (and your Area Committee) socially until about 7:30pm and to ask questions.  You do not need to attend both these events; you are welcome at just one of them.

Repertoire for the Evensong is:

Introit : Holy is the true light – Harris New Church Anthem Book page 164

Hymn : Thou art the Christ, O Lord NEH172

Responses : Tomkins Church Music Society booklet, page 16

               Psalm 138 Parish Psalter

Office hymn : Let the round world with songs rejoice NEH214, second tune

Canticles : Noble in B minor

Anthem : Lo, round the throne a glorious band – Ley New Church Anthem Book page 215

Hymn : Give me the wings of faith to rise NEH225, second tune

Any editions of the introit, responses, canticles and anthem can be used; the indications above, which are purely for reference, are those most likely to be held already by most participants.  We should be able to organise loan copies for those who need them; please indicate this on the booking form.  Annotated copies of the hymns and psalm will be sent to participants nearer to the date.

The cost for the Regional Evensong is £5 per head.  There is no charge for the social event, though donations will be invited towards the cost of refreshments – please note that we will only serve wine to those aged 18 or over.

If you can display a poster for this event at your church, please do. Click here for an A4 poster or here  for two A5 flyers.

Bookings are now open using the form below, and will remain open until Saturday 15th June.  Further information will be sent to participants as soon as possible after that date.

Want to Sing Regularly at St Albans Cathedral?

abbeyHere’s an opportunity to sing regularly at St Albans Cathedral. The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban PARISH SINGERS is a voluntary, auditioned, adult choir who sing at most of the 9.30 Parish Eucharist Services throughout the year, as well as at Carols on the Hour at Christmas and occasional evensongs. We sing a variety of music, but mostly traditional motets. Prospective members who are competent singers and sight readers are very welcome to come along and try us out prior to audition. Rehearsals are in the Cathedral Song School on Wednesday evenings 8-9.15pm every two to three weeks, followed by a quick drink in the White Hart opposite. The choir is very friendly and auditions, with Andrew Lucas – Master of the Music – are not onerous. Please contact the Cathedral Music Secretary, Lizzie, on 01727 890245 or by email:
